How and why we cry
Humans cry for a number of reasons.
Can dogs or cats cry? No, they can’t. They may be able to make tears(眼泪). But that does not count as “real” crying, because their tears do not come from feelings.
Scientists think only we humans(人类) can cry because of strong feelings, like sadness(悲伤) and happiness.
Young kids cry a lot because something happened to them, like falling over or dropping their ice cream on the floor. But as we grow up, we cry more because we feel for other people. “Your world becomes greater, so there are more people ... important [to] you,” Ad Vingerhoets, a scientist from the Netherlands, told The New York Times.
For humans, crying is a call for help. It quickly lets other people see that something is not right, and helps people become closer with each other. Crying also helps us calm down(冷静) and think about difficult things, according to(根据) Medical News Today.
DIFFERENT KINDS OF TEARS
We have three kinds of tears. They have different uses.
- Basal tears(基础性眼泪)
Our eyes are always making basal tears to keep them from getting dry.
- Reflex tears(反射性眼泪)
Have you ever cut an onion and started crying? These tears are reflex tears. They help wash out bad things.
- Emotional tears(情绪性眼泪)
These tears are special. They usually have more protein. That makes them flow less quickly than the other two kinds. This way, other people can see them more easily and come help.
